The Real Reason Behind the Artist Stigma
So you may have heard people derisively call art careers "useless", right? Well, during WWII, there was a need for artists for propaganda posters. Propaganda is communication that's used to influence people and advance an agenda, objective or not. Propaganda can use facts to encourage a particular synthesis or perception, or loaded language to elicit an emotional response over a rational one. Propaganda, and the art used in making it, dates back to at least ancient Near East, when people realised the need to rally their citizens to their causes, selfish or otherwise. The Sumerians created the Standard of Ur, found in royal tombs of the namesake region, used as flags to carry into battle. So when did the stigma of being an artist in the Western World begin? Well, I think it has to do with the Vietnam and Korean Wars, when artists started to become largely anti-military and anti-war. This likely made them a threat to their governments.
